FRAMING x NORTH DAKOTA

Framing contractor requirements in North Dakota.

Framing is building construction under N.D.C.C. § 43-07-01, and the contractor definition expressly includes subcontractors, so a framing crew working for a general contractor still needs its own Secretary of State license on any job over $4,000. There is no trade exam or experience requirement beyond a sworn statement.

The license class caps the value of any single contract: D $100,000, C $300,000, B $500,000, A unlimited. Fees run $100 to $450, plus a liability insurance certificate naming the Secretary of State and WSI coverage. Licenses renew every March 1.

LICENSE TRUTH
North Dakota has no framing or carpentry license; framers need a Secretary of State Class A–D contractor license — including as subcontractors — for any job over $4,000.
STATE ↔ LOCAL
The ch. 43-07 license is statewide and is administered only by the Secretary of State; the statute contains no clause barring cities from adding their own contractor licensing. Building officials must record the contractor's state license number on each permit (N.D.C.C. § 43-07-24), and the registrar supplies city and county enforcement officials with the licensed-contractor list (§ 43-07-25).

§ 08 · North Dakota FAQ

Questions framing contractors ask about North Dakota.

Q01Do framing subcontractors need a license in North Dakota?+
Yes, on any job over $4,000. N.D.C.C. § 43-07-01 defines 'contractor' to include subcontractors, and § 43-07-02 requires the Secretary of State license above $4,000.
Q02What do the contractor license classes cost?+
Under N.D.C.C. § 43-07-07: Class A (no project limit) $450, Class B (single projects up to $500,000) $300, Class C (up to $300,000) $225, and Class D (up to $100,000) $100. Annual renewals are $90, $60, $45, and $30.

Yes, in effect. N.D.C.C. § 43-07-02(1) requires the state contractor license only when the cost, value, or price per job exceeds $4,000. Below that you need no Secretary of State license, though separate trade licenses (electrical, plumbing, pesticide) apply at any job size.
