CONCRETE x MISSISSIPPI

Concrete contractor requirements in Mississippi.

MSBOC's commercial classification list carries three concrete specialties under Building Construction: Concrete and Concrete Paving (both with a trade exam) and Concrete Reinforcing. A certificate is required for public or private concrete contracts or subcontracts of $50,000 or more (Miss. Code Ann. § 31-3-1); below that, the commercial statute does not apply.

There is no residential concrete classification. Concrete work that is part of building a new home over $50,000 sits under the residential builder's license, and a contractor who undertakes improvements to an existing residence costing more than $10,000 meets the statutory definition of a remodeler (§ 73-59-1(c)). Concrete subcontractors are not among the trades § 73-59-3(1)(d) licenses at any dollar amount.

LICENSE TRUTH
Mississippi has no concrete trade license; commercial concrete contracts of $50,000 or more need an MSBOC certificate in the Concrete specialty, and residential concrete falls under the builder ($50,000) and remodeler ($10,000) thresholds.
STATE ↔ LOCAL
Mississippi licensing is statewide through MSBOC, but cities and counties enforce it: building officials must refuse permits to anyone who would be a residential builder or remodeler unless they show an MSBOC license or exemption, and must report suspected violations to the Board (Miss. Code Ann. § 73-59-17). Residential contractors without a permanent Mississippi place of business (and not holding a commercial certificate) also need a Department of Revenue permit under § 27-65-27 to obtain a building permit, regardless of project cost or insurance funding (§ 73-59-18).

Mississippi has no concrete-specific license; the obligation comes from the contractor statutes and their dollar thresholds.

NOTE
Net worth for specialties

Commercial specialty applicants must show at least $20,000 net worth on a CPA-reviewed financial statement ($50,000 for major classifications).

NOTE
Subs below $50,000

§ 08 · Mississippi FAQ

Questions concrete contractors ask about Mississippi.

Q01Do I need a license to pour concrete in Mississippi?+
Not below the thresholds. Commercial concrete contracts of $50,000 or more require an MSBOC certificate in the Concrete (or Concrete Paving) specialty; residential work follows the builder ($50,000) and remodeler ($10,000) thresholds.
Q02Is there a small-job exemption in Mississippi?+
There is no named handyman license, but the residential statute only reaches residential builders on homes costing more than $50,000 and remodelers on improvements to an existing residence costing more than $10,000 (Miss. Code Ann. § 73-59-1). The exception: subcontractors doing electrical, plumbing, mechanical, or HVAC work on a residential project need an MSBOC license no matter the dollar amount (§ 73-59-3(1)(d)).
Q03Is there a trade exam for concrete?+
MSBOC lists a trade exam for the commercial Concrete and Concrete Paving specialties, plus the Law & Business Management exam every applicant takes; Concrete Reinforcing shows no trade exam.
