Under MCA 37-68-301 no one may work as or hold out as an electrician or electrical contractor without a Department of Labor & Industry license. An electrical contractor must have one responsible licensed electrician: a master electrician makes it an unlimited contractor (residential, commercial, industrial, institutional), while a journeyman may be the responsible electrician only for a limited residential contractor serving structures of fewer than five living units. Individual electricians must work for a licensed electrical contractor.
A journeyman license requires a completed apprenticeship or 8,000 hours of legally obtained experience and a PSI exam passed at 70%; a residential electrician needs a residential apprenticeship or 4,000 residential hours; a master needs four years as a licensed journeyman and a 75% exam score. Every electrician completes 16 hours of NEC code education per two-year cycle. Owners wiring their own property and work at 90 volts or less are exempt.
The state sets the license floor; the county or city permit office controls filing, inspections, and local rules wherever the job site sits.
Electrical licensing is state-only. Local governments certified by DLI's Building Codes Program may enforce the electrical code and issue permits within their area; elsewhere the state program permits and inspects.

Only one electrical licensee may be the electrician responsible for a licensed electrical contractor, and that licensee's level sets the contractor's scope.
The board abated renewal fees 50% for the 2026 renewal cycle (deadline July 15, 2026).
Licensed electricians working within their license are exempt from the Construction Contractor License (MCA 37-45-104(16)).

Electricians who cannot show a license or proof of licensure on the job may be cited; each day is a separate offense.
Inside city limits, the city office listed here issues the permit; the county office serves unincorporated areas. Every office links to its official page.
