FLOORING x WYOMING

Flooring contractor requirements in Wyoming.

No Wyoming statute licenses flooring installers or flooring contractors. Local contractor licensing applies where a city or county has adopted it, and W.S. 16-6-1101 makes Wyoming jurisdictions recognize each other's licenses on proof of a passing ICC or equivalent exam. Flooring installation is construction, so a flooring business with employees must obtain a workers' compensation statement of coverage before starting work (W.S. 27-14-108, 27-14-207).

Flooring contractors keep lien rights only by sending the preliminary notice — before any payment for a prime contractor, within 30 days of first work for a subcontractor (W.S. 29-2-112). Work in homes built before 1978 that disturbs painted surfaces such as trim or thresholds can trigger EPA's lead-safe Renovation, Repair and Painting rule.

LICENSE TRUTH
Wyoming has no state flooring license — flooring installers need only whatever local contractor license their city or county requires, plus workers' comp if they have employees.
STATE ↔ LOCAL
Wyoming has no statewide license for this trade, so contractor licensing is local. Cities, towns, and counties that license contractors set their own classes, exams, and bonds, but W.S. 16-6-1101 requires each of them to recognize an active, good-standing license issued by another Wyoming jurisdiction when the contractor shows a passing International Code Council (or equivalent) exam — with no retesting, though the accepting jurisdiction may require its own proof of financial assurance. Building codes are enforced by municipalities and counties that have taken delegated authority from the State Fire Marshal (W.S. 35-9-121), and any electrical work stays with state-licensed electrical contractors (W.S. 35-9-123).

§ 08 · Wyoming FAQ

Questions flooring contractors ask about Wyoming.

Q01Do flooring installers need a license in Wyoming?+
Not from the state. Wyoming has no flooring license; a city or county that licenses contractors may require one (W.S. 16-6-1101).
Q02Can a Wyoming city require its own contractor license?+
Yes. Licensing is local in Wyoming, but W.S. 16-6-1101 requires every county, city, and town that licenses contractors to recognize an active, good-standing license from another Wyoming jurisdiction when you show a passing ICC (or equivalent) exam — no retesting, though it may require its own financial assurance and may deny a contractor it previously revoked or suspended.
Q03What lien notice do Wyoming contractors have to send?+
A prime contractor must send the record owner written notice of lien rights before receiving any payment, including advances; subcontractors and suppliers within 30 days of first furnishing work or materials (W.S. 29-2-112). Before filing, send a notice of intent at least 20 days ahead (§ 29-2-107); primes file within 150 days and others within 120 days (§ 29-2-106).
